Poultry Blood Testing Information

According to the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA), the chickens or turkeys that need to be blood tested for participation at the Holmes County Fair are those that have been on premises with other chickens, turkeys, guineas, peacocks or other non-water fowl that do not have a NPIP Hatchery certificate from this year. The poultry that needs to be tested within 30 days prior to the fair are the following: fancy chickens that were from last year; broilers that have fancy chickens or other non-water fowl on the same premises and those fancy chickens/non-water fowl that do not have NPIP certificates from this year; turkeys that have other non-water fowl on the premises and the other non-water fowl do not have NPIP certificates. The ODA’s guidelines are subject to change. At this time, ducks do not have to be blood tested.

While you are not obligated to use his services, Dr. Eric Shaver will offer pullorum testing of turkeys and chickens on Tuesday, July 24, from 4:00- 6:00 p.m. at the East Holmes Veterinary Clinic, Millersburg office at 5101 TR 305 in Millersburg. Each chicken tested will cost $1, plus $5 for the health certificate (one certificate per group of exhibitor’s chickens, up to 12). Each turkey tested will cost $2, plus $5 for the health certificate (up to 12) and an $18 per family ODA accession fee. The turkeys’ tests will be sent to Reynoldsburg for processing. The junior fair exhibitor will need to bring the health certificate(s) for the birds that were tested to the fair.
