OCTOBER 2005 www.ag.ohio-state.edu/~holm/4h/4h.htm
Dear 4-H Family,

Thank you to all who helped to make my first experience with the whole process leading up to the Holmes County Fair an enjoyable, positive, and educational one. Those who know me best saw daily growth in my knowledge of animal facts! I found myself reading a beef quality assurance book after I attended the steer carcass show to learn even more.
(They ought to have followed the Steer Carcass Show with a Beef-Tasting Show!)
Now that we are wrapping up another 4-H year, it is important to evaluate how things went and to give some thought as to how to improve them for next year. With this in mind, I have included a questionnaire entitled 2005 Holmes County 4-H Program Review to be filled out by 4-H Volunteers, parents, 4-H members, and any other interested individuals who have participated in our 4-H program. Your input is important to me. Please fill them out and return to the Extension Office by October 31st. Thank you.
I am looking forward to seeing the advisors, animal
committee members, Jr. and Sr. Fair Board members,
Sincerely,
Paula Hathaway

STEER WEIGH-IN
The Steer weigh-in is scheduled for Saturday, December 17 at the Holmes County Fairgrounds from 9:00 a.m. till Noon. This is mandatory in order to participate in the August, 2006 Holmes County Fair. There are absolutely no late entries for steer projects. Only one beef steer or dairy steer may be entered in the fair, but two may be tagged. Siblings in the same family may weigh-in one steer that will serve as the family back-up steer for either sibling. It will be registered under one sibling’s name but could be used by the other sibling should the need arise.
If you are taking a beef steer or dairy steer project for
the first time, this is the time of year to be getting your animal. Please call the Extension Office and let
Paula know if you are taking a steer for the first time this coming year
so she will be sure to send you notices about the weigh-in and the steer show. You
may also want to get a copy of this year’s fair book or the Market Steer
Requirements page from the Extension Office to check on requirements for fair
participation. Besides having your steer weighed and tagged on Dec. 17, you
will need to show your steer in a steer show. The steer show in
ANIMAL COMMITTEES
Thank you to all the members of the animal committees who have given of their time and expertise to work with and for our youth as they put on Quality Assurance and Fitting and Showmanship Clinics, amended the fair book, interviewed the youth on Skillathon night, organized and prepared the fairgrounds, and assisted with shows at the fair. Thanks, too, in advance for starting to plan for next year’s program! Probably the best way to learn about anything is from someone who loves what they are doing and our volunteers are passionate about their animals!
How many animal committees are there? There are 9: Beef, Dairy, Goat, Horse, Llama, Poultry, Rabbit, Sheep and Swine.
What do the animal committees do? The animal committees work with OSU Extension’s 4-H Youth Development Program and the Holmes County Fair Board to support, educate and promote 4-H and FFA members in their livestock projects. They meet 5-12 times a year, organize and run clinics, assist at Skillathon/Interveiw Judging, update the fair book, and sometimes conduct fundraisers to raise funds to improve the program or fairgrounds.
Who belongs to the animal committees?
Each animal specie’s committee is comprised of volunteers who wish to give of their time and talent to support our youth and strengthen our program. Volunteers may be 4-H advisors and community members who come from all walks of life. Some volunteers have a strong background and knowledge of a particular specie. Others wish to learn more and are willing to give their labor where needed.
How can one join a
committee? You may
contact a member of the animal committee you wish to join or call the Extension
Office for the date and location of the next meeting.
THANK YOU NOTES

DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL SCIENCES
“COACH’S
CLINIC”
Participation by youth in some of the state animal sciences
team activities has diminished in the past couple of years. Youth develop
critical skills when they are part of a judging team. Not only do they learn
more about their project areas, but they also learn how to think on their feet
as they judge animals against standards and give oral reasons.
COUNTY & STATE TEEN OPPORTUNITIES
4-H Youth who are in 8th grade this year and older will be receiving a mailing in December which has the required paperwork for applying for many county and state teen opportunities. Please be aware of the dates applications are due as late registrations are not accepted. Contact the Extension Office if you have not received the mailing by December 15.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Teen volunteers are needed to help with the After-school Programs in four West Holmes Elementary Schools. There are three different ways: teach a short nutrition lesson, conduct a physical activity or help pack boxes of food for the program. The lessons are already planned and the days you are available to help are your choice. This is a good way to get experience in working with children. Please talk to Paula about how you may help.
CARTEENS ![]()
Teens who are at least 15 ½ and driving are invited to be a part of CARTEENS, a program to promote safe driving among teens. CARTEENS meets on the third Wednesday each month. 4-H teens help prepare and present the program for first time juvenile traffic offenders. CARTEENS will also plan and participate in the Mock Crash that is scheduled to occur at Hiland High in the spring of 2006. 4-H teens may join CARTEENS at any time of the year. Please contact Volunteer Coordinators, Patricia and Larry Lang at 330-378-3865 for more information.
